War News. Protests Rock The Afghanistan & Are Depleted Uranium Munitions Causing Birth Defects?

In the past couple of weeks Afghanistan has crept back into the news and we have had a couple of posts on our 7-10 Split blog. The first report is on the protests and a wave of assassinations of US soldiers have swept the country. It also includes a video on the Russian invasion.  The other report is a fairly disturbing one about potential effects of depleted uranium weapons on Afghan people. This second report includes graphic video of deformed babies.

And we have added this video just because people need to see what the consequences of our actions are.

Taliban peace talks ‘at risk’ as Obama stalls on Guantánamo

From;, The Obama administration is in danger of missing an historic opportunity for a peace settlement in Afghanistan if it does not act quickly to release prisoners in response to a Taliban offer to open talks, European officials and observers claim.

The Taliban announced on 3 January that it had agreed to open a political office in Qatar for the purpose of holding peace talks with the international community, and said it expected the release of its officials being held at Guantánamo Bay.
At the time, White House officials said the administration was considering the transfer of five Taliban officials to custody in another
country, widely believed to be Qatar. But with still no movement on the prisoner transfers European officials involved in the talks are
urging Washington to act quickly to keep the momentum going towards talks before hardline spoilers on all sides can stall proceedings.

What do possible peace talks between the U.S. and the Taliban mean for Afghanistan’s future?

Right Wing Terror Plot, The True Story Of 9/11!!!!!

September 14, 2011 Leave a comment

The dirty little secret about modern  terrorism is that it is a tool used and often caused by conservative right wing forces to attack those that seek peace,  freedom, justice for everyone.  This is true throughout the globe and while the causes that these terrorists might in some cases be lofty the terrorist organizations in almost all cases were created by the very repressive forces they fight.People with honest grievances are exploited by those who want to create fear within a general population.

No better example of this fact can be found than the attacks on September 11, 2001. Here we have al-Qaeda a terrorist organization created by the intelligence services of the US, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. It was a small part of a much larger army of like-minded religious fanatics created by these same organizations to destabilize Afghanistan and then fight the Soviet Union when they intervene. Before the war started in Afghanistan the government had been elected and for a country in the Middle East fairly progressive. After more than a decade of war we helped usher in the Taliban who created a brutally suppressive government based on right-wing ideology.

But once you start a boulder rolling downhill it’s tough to stop. So having created an army of religious fanatics what happens once you’ve achieved your strategic goal? They just aren’t going to fade away.  So most of them went back to their home countries to wage terror against governments they see as repressive.

al-Qaeda was a special case because Osama Bin-Laden came from a connected family, one of the wealthiest in the world. For awhile he took on the Saudi government for its allowing American troops to be based there. Then he was bought off by the government and al-Qaeda became an international terrorist organization who declared war on the US.

A central part of his  war strategy was to induce America into invading and occupying countries in the Middle East. The cost of which would help to destroy our economy. So in the end this right-wing terror organization that we helped create gets it’s victory and the added bonus of helping to cause a right-wing coup in this country that continues to repress individual rights and destroy any socially helpful parts of government.

And the sad thing is that most Americans don’t see, don’t want to know or don’t care because (they think) it doesn’t effect them.

Anyway today we present a broader look at how right-wing terror has been used to justify war. And in the end how it is self defeating

The Decline and Fall of the American Empire / By Mike Davis

“If Sarajevo and the World Trade Center, in contrast, unleashed global carnage and chaos, it was because a de facto collusion existed between the attackers and the attacked.  I’m not referring to mythical British plots in the Balkans or Mossad agents blowing up the Twin Towers, but simply to well-known facts: by 1912, the Imperial German General Staff had already decided to exploit the first opportunity to make war, and powerful neocons around George W. Bush were lobbying for the overthrow of the regimes in Baghdad and Tehran even before the last hanging chad had been counted in Florida in 2000.

Both the Hohenzollerns and the Texans were in search of a casus belli that would legitimate military intervention and silence domestic opposition.

Prussian militarism, of course, was punctually accommodated by the Black Hand — a terrorist group sponsored by the Serbian general staff — that assassinated the Archduke and his wife, while al-Qaeda’s horror show in lower Manhattan consecrated the divine right of the White House to torture, secretly imprison, and kill by remote control.

At the time, it seemed almost as if Bush and Cheney had staged a coup d’étatagainst the Constitution.  Yet they could cynically but accurately point to a whole catalogue of precedents.”

Debt Crisis? Not For The War Machine, 2 New Stories

August 6, 2011 Leave a comment

While the Republicans hold the country hostage and President once again capitulates and sells out the average American. Those who have paid into Social Security for years created a 2+ trillion dollar surplus. Now we discover that that trust fund has been used to finance our debt. And in order to reduce the debt they are told it is their benefits that have to be cut.

At the same time the global campaign to kill anyone that might pose a threat goes on. Here are two stories from the battlefield.

Debt crisis? What debt crisis? US to purchase $23 billion worth of drones

 “Matt Gratz, Political Fail Blog-

Don’t you hate it when someone owes you $14 trillion, and they have the nerve to go buy billions of dollars worth of spy planes?

Over the next few years, the United States will buy 55 Global Hawk drone planes at $218 million each. Hey, no one said policing the world was a cheap national hobby.

Global Hawk drones are able to fly twice as high as commercial aircrafts and can pinpoint “the enemy” up to 100 miles away. Once identified, the robotic planes that are controlled from 24-hour command stations can then send images to intelligence centers or directly to troops.

So as the country braces for the next great depression, at least we know someone on the other side of the planet is being watched… from 100 miles away. Sorry teachers, firefighters, hospital workers and other laborers of society, you’ll just have to take (another)one for the team.”

Our Commando War in 120 Countries: Uncovering the Military’s Secret Operations In the Obama Era

AlterNet and TomDispatch / By Nick Turse

“Somewhere on this planet an American commando is carrying out a mission.  Now, say that 70 times and you’re done… for the day.  Without the knowledge of the American public, a secret force within the U.S. military is undertaking operations in a majority of the world’s countries.  This new Pentagon power elite is waging a global war whose size and scope has never been revealed, until now.”…………
………”Last year, Karen DeYoung and Greg Jaffe of the Washington Post reported that U.S. Special Operations forces were deployed in 75 countries, up from 60 at the end of the Bush presidency.  By the end of this year, U.S. Special Operations Command spokesman Colonel Tim Nye told me, that number will likely reach 120.  “We do a lot of traveling — a lot more than Afghanistan or Iraq,” he said recently.  This global presence — in about 60% of the world’s nations and far larger than previously acknowledged — provides striking new evidence of a rising clandestine Pentagon power elite waging a secret war in all corners of the world.”

While The GOP & The President Debate How Badly To Screw The Old & Sick, The Beat Goes On

We have a huge debt problem in this country. A decade of out of control security spending, that was unpaid for, has left us in a bad place. The response in Washington as reflected by the news media has been to blame the elderly and the sick. Meanwhile the corrupt and out of control war machine rolls on. It is more important for us to prop up the warlords and drug barons of Afghanistan than to provide health and opportunity at home. The only security we really seem to be providing is for the arms dealers who are making a killing.

For your consideration we offer these posts:

From AlterNet;By David Morris
Why Is the Most Wasteful Government Agency Not Part of the Deficit Discussion?
“ In all the talk about the federal deficit, why is the single largest culprit left out of the conversation? Why is the one part of government that best epitomizes everything conservatives say they hate about government—- waste, incompetence, and corruption—all but exempt from conservative criticism?…….
And these are only the tips of the military’s misspending iceberg. We really don’t know how much the Pentagon wastes because, believe it or not, there hasn’t been a complete audit of the Pentagon in more than 15 years.

In 1994, the Government Management Reform Act required the Inspector General of each federal agency to audit and publish the financial statements of their agency. The Department of Defense was the only agency that has been unable to comply. In fiscal 1998 the Department of Defense used $1.7 trillion of undocumentable adjustments to balance the books. In 2002 the situation was even worse. CBS News reported that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld admitted, “we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions.”

Imagine that a school district were to reveal that it didn’t know where it spent its money. Now imagine the Republican response. Perhaps, “Off with their desktops!”

Debt Political Theater Diverts Attention While Americans’ Wealth Is Stolen
by Dennis Kucinich

“The rancorous debate over the debt belies a fundamental truth of our economy — that it is run for the few at the expense of the many, that our entire government has been turned into a machine which takes the wealth of a mass of Americans and accelerates it into the hands of the few. Let me give you some examples.

Take war. War takes the money from the American people and puts it into the hands of arms manufacturers, war profiteers, and private armies. The war in Iraq, based on lies: $3 trillion will be the cost of that war. The war in Afghanistan; based on a misreading of history; half a trillion dollars in expenses already. The war against Libya will be $1 billion by September.”

Corruption In Iraq, Tax Cuts For The Rich & Arnold Schwarzenegger

We have a little stew today it started with one story but then some other things got tossed in the pot and well here we are.

This isn’t even a new story but it happened in 2004 and there were those who at the time it was going on said a lot of this cash was being stolen. So now here we are seven years later and auditors are finally saying almost half the cash was stolen. It’s stunning on so many levels and yet it’s just a small part of the gigantic criminal enterprise that this war has been. You had no justification for the invasion and occupation. You had no plan on what you were going to do once you took over the country. You had no oversight on any of this and to top it off you have no exhaustive investigation into the whole mess.

To be sure there are lots of investigations into little pieces of the disaster like this one that the story is based on. There will be no accounting for the invasion itself because in really a stunning abdication of responsibility the Democrats were given the majority in the whole Congress and the White House and decided we don’t really want to look into this. Probably because the same sort of madness still goes on in Afghanistan.

Let me put it this way the two parties have formed a throughly corrupt partnership and are engaged in activities that if any private company or people were engaged would be called racketering. It’s absolutely disgusting that were told that public employees have to give up there union rights because were told they make too much money. It’s obscene that were telling our elderly that they have shoulder a much larger share of their health care costs. And the endless waste of a never ending supply of billions of dollars goes on with hardly a peep from the people the press and Congress. Those of us who are outraged generally express here on the Internet where it gets lost among the millions of other voices. While at the same time making it easy for the government to know who to keep an eye on.

At this point the only hope the country has for lawmakers who are sick of this dirty racket to leave their party and become independents. Take a look at Bernie Sanders from Vermont an independent and his voice is always consistent and always in support of the people and for what is just and fair. It would be nice to see him joined by folks like Ron Paul, Colin Powell, Al Franken or fill in the blank.

Missing Iraq money may have been stolen, auditors say

By Paul Richter, Los Angeles Times

June 13, 2011

Reporting from Washington—

After the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003, the George W. Bush administration flooded the conquered country with so much cash to pay for reconstruction and other projects in the first year that a new unit of measurement was born.

Pentagon officials determined that one giant C-130 Hercules cargo plane could carry $2.4 billion in shrink-wrapped bricks of $100 bills. They sent an initial full planeload of cash, followed by 20 other flights to Iraq by May 2004 in a $12-billion haul that U.S. officials believe to be the biggest international cash airlift of all time.

This month, the Pentagon and the Iraqi government are finally closing the books on the program that handled all those Benjamins. But despite years of audits and investigations, U.S. Defense officials still cannot say what happened to $6.6 billion in cash — enough to run the Los Angeles Unified School District or the Chicago Public Schools for a year, among many other things.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Gives A Stunning Speech On Corporate Greed & Then Gets Caught In A Sex Scandal

And on the subject of corruption last September Arnold Schwarzenegger gave a speech lashing out at corporate corruption that the press in this country mostly ignored but I did a post on it from a story on a British site. Anyway when I was thinking about potential independent politicians and right away thought of him but then of course realized that just this past May he was caught up in a sex scandal that didn’t go away. Funny how those things happen.

ONE MORE thing a word about the wealthy because they have prospered mightily these past ten years while the rest of us have suffered. But they are the job creators right? Well maybe they are but the jobs they are creating with the windfall of tax cuts they’ve received aren’t in this country. Because since the Bush era started 53,000 factories have been closed so those job creators that need that tax break. In fact since the Bush tax cuts took effect we’ve lost 1.1 million jobs. By contrast after Clinton raised taxes 23 million jobs were created in eight years. That and more from Cenk Uygur of the Young Turks.
